Herbal Medicine

Herbal medicine is one of the oldest and most sophisticated systems of healing in the world. Long before pharmaceutical medicine isolated individual compounds, practitioners of East Asian medicine were working with complex botanical formulas, precisely combined, carefully dosed, and adapted to the individual.

This is not wellness supplementation. It is a complete system of medicine in its own right - one that has been refined over thousands of years and continues to be supported by a growing body of modern research.

At Living Yin, herbal medicine is woven into your acupuncture care when appropriate, extending and deepening the work between sessions, and addressing the patterns that drive your symptoms at their root.

the art & science of herbal formulation

East Asian herbal medicine is not a single herb for a single symptom. It is a system of formulation where individual herbs are combined to create something greater than the sum of their parts.

Each herb in a formula has a specific role. Some address the root pattern driving your symptoms, and some treat the presenting complaint directly. Some protect and support the digestive system while the formula does its work. Some moderate the actions of other herbs, ensuring the formula is both effective and well tolerated.

Formulas are like living prescriptions, adjusted as your body responds, as your cycle shifts, and as your symptoms evolve. What you take in week one of your cycle may look different from what you take in week three. This level of complexity is what distinguishes classical herbal medicine from anything you would find on a shelf.

Herbs are typically prescribed in one of several forms - granulated powders dissolved in warm water, capsules, or tinctures - chosen based on your preference, your lifestyle, and what will best support you.

how herbal medicine
works in your care

Herbal medicine is offered as an integrated part of your acupuncture treatment plan, not as a separate service but as an extension of the same clinical thinking.

When herbs are appropriate for your situation, we will discuss them as part of your treatment. Your formula is chosen based on your specific pattern, your cycle phase, your constitution, and what your body needs at this moment in time.  It is reviewed and adjusted at follow-up appointments as your body responds and your presentation evolves.

Between acupuncture sessions, your herbal formula continues the work. Acupuncture creates shifts in the body, and herbs help sustain and deepen them. These two modalities are complementary to one another and for many of the conditions we work with in women's health, combining them can produce more meaningful results that either would alone.

Herbal medicine & Women's health

Herbal medicine has a particularly rich and sophisticated tradition when it comes to women's health. For thousands of years, practitioners have worked with the cyclical nature of the body, developing formulas that support the menstrual cycle, fertility, pregnancy, postpartum recovery, and the hormonal transitions of perimenopause.

For those navigating fertility challenges, herbs support hormonal regulation, ovarian function, uterine lining quality, and the specific patterns that East Asian medicine identifies as underlying contributors to reproductive difficulty.

A note on herbal medicine and fertility medications - in many cases, herbal formulas are not recommended alongside active fertility medication protocols, including IVF stimulation. medications and hormonal treatments. There are circumstances where herbs may be appropriate at specific points in a protocol, and this is always assessed carefully and individually. Your safety and the integrity of your western treatment plan are always the first consideration.

For those navigating pregnancy, herbal medicine is offered selectively and with great care, addressing nausea, fatigue, anxiety, and supporting a healthy pregnancy and the body's preparation for birth.

For women in the postpartum season, herbs are among the most powerful tools. available; Replenishing what birth depletes, supporting lactation, and helping the body find its way back to itself.

For women navigating perimenopause, herbal medicine addresses the hormonal fluctuations, sleep disruption, mood changes, and the physical symptoms of this transition with depth and nuance.

A Note on standalone herbal consultations

At this time, herbal medicine is offered as part of an acupuncture treatment plan.

Standalone herbal consultations are not currently available, though this is something I hope to offer in the future.
